Birthday orchid

my birthday was yesterday

when I opened my Google pictures the first thing I saw was my best friend who passed away last march. First I cried for a long while. Then I decided to take it as a message, maybe he was just telling me happy birthday. The first one of the day, too. I’d rather believe in that than to spend the day crying. I’m so blessed to be here at 25. So lucky to be alive, lucky to cry lucky to laugh lucky to feel and touch, I’m so lucky to believe.

So my sweet friends gifted me a Lego orchid, which my honey and I have been working on together, but today she is at work and I don’t go in until later, so instead, I wrote a poem. Ode to Lego orchid (ode to life):

Lego orchid

Made forever

As for the plants in my yard

I’ll try to do better

See the florida sun hits you perfectly at noon

And at one

And at two

When my mom used to say ‘that sun is angry today’

I guess you understand what that means

Better than I do

But Lego orchid? Made forever

No humidity no sunlight

The only enemy is my cat

Who thinks your spinning petals are toys for her

(They are)

Lego orchid

Made forever

One day she will outlive me

But you can find me again

In the Lego petals

  1. Overall, this feels like an honest look at life. Not perfect, not easy, but still worth living in its own quiet way.
